The New Mercedes-Benz S-Class once again sets a new benchmark in the luxury car segment. Mercedes Benz has also matched the stronger, larger body with its latest EQ Boost system, which pairs a 48-volt electrical system with an integrated starter-generator and an auxiliary compressor that spools the turbo. The S500L features a turbocharged 3.0-litre straight-six engine, good for 429 hp and 520 Nm of torque.

Inspired by the world of luxury yachts, the interior of the new W223 S-Class has a sizeable wraparound wood trim that is seamlessly integrated into the minimalist dashboard. Dominating proceedings is the 12.8-inch portrait touchscreen, which floats above the dash and flows neatly into the centre console. The air vents consist of two slim vertical slots on either side of the wood trim, plus four rectangular vents above the centre screen.
Mercedes-Benz says that the unusually large wood trim has been inspired by a ship’s deck and flowing lines, and has been meticulously sculpted in clay during the design process. With the big touchscreen, the designers have been able to reduce the number of physical buttons into just a single strip below the display, as well as the usual Mercedes door-mounted seat controls.
The multi-colour ambient lighting system has also been upgraded. Consisting of a total of 250 LEDs, it is visible even in daylight. Notable features include MBUX v2.0, its computing power is now up to 50% higher than before. The screen directly in front of the driver that acts as the speedometer and tachometer is made up of stacked OLED layers to create a 3D effect without the need of 3D glasses.
MBUX also works together with an overhead camera in the cabin to track and monitor the driver’s movement to enable gesture controls such as adjusting the wing mirrors depending on which mirror you’re looking at.

The OLED middle screen that controls the infotainment, climate controls and various vehicle functions now measure 12.8-inches in size and is in portrait orientation. The bigger screen helped to eliminate 27 physical buttons in the cabin and it comes with haptic feedback so you know you’ve activated something when you tap one of the virtual buttons.
The W223 will also be the first S-Class to come with Mercedes’ Energizing seat kinetics function, which will periodically make minute adjustments to the seating position to improve posture and comfort.

Power comes from a 3.0-liter Inline-6 turbo with 429 hp and 520 Nm. EQ Boost and electric auxiliary compressor are supplemented with 21bhp and 249 Nm. Coupled with 9G-Tronic gearbox and all-wheel drive, the S500L is capable of a 0 to 100kmh in 5 seconds and a top speed electronically limited to 250 kmh.
